Knee Joint Calcification and Meniscus Tear
Arthrosis (Joint Calcification)
The most important symptom is a short-term joint stiffness in the morning and painful joint movements. Sometimes swelling or a slight increase in temperature over the joint may also be noticed. The knees are the most affected joints.
The most important factors in the development of arthrosis are age and overload. One of the most effective methods to improve joint range of motion and reduce pain is physical therapy. After physical therapy, it is very important to regularly do daily exercise programs that do not force the joint too much. In recent years, some special injections into the joint can provide comfort lasting 6 months to 1 year. Although all treatments have been tried, it may be necessary to resort to surgical methods in cases that progress, disturb the daily life of the patient and cause a lot of pain. Although it is possible to correct some of the irregularities in the articular cartilage with the arthroscopy method in middle-aged patients, prosthetic surgeries are preferably performed after the age of 55-60.
Meniscus
As with the wear of the joint cartilage, a tear may occur in the meniscus cartilage during a reverse movement in those who use their knees a lot or in athletes. If this situation occurs suddenly, it manifests itself with severe pain and joint swelling. During knee movements, complaints of pain and snagging occur and the patient begins to prevent the patient from walking fast and going up and down stairs. For a definitive diagnosis, MRI can be performed after a detailed examination and the degree of the tear is determined. Surgery is unnecessary in small tears. Physical therapy and rehabilitation methods help the patient to relax. Along with treatments such as ultrasound, laser and TENS, the muscles around the knee are strengthened with special exercises performed in the pool or on land, and care is taken not to strain the knee again.
Orthopedic surgery methods are used in patients whose complaints do not resolve despite these treatments; The meniscus is partially removed and the articular surface is smoothed. A comprehensive rehabilitation program must be applied after the operation.
